The California Highway Patrol says a driver and passenger who fled law enforcement were killed and a box truck driver was critically injured in a collision on Interstate 5 near the J Street onramp in Sacramento Saturday morning.
According to the CHP report, the collision took place after the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department pursued a Toyota Sienna through the downtown Sacramento area. The driver had failed to stop for law enforcement after a scan found the license plate to have been reported lost or stolen, the CHP says.
The pursuit ended when the Sienna driver began driving the wrong way down westbound J Street. The driver then drove the wrong way onto the I-5 southbound and ran head-on into an Isuzu box truck at approximately 7:38 a.m. Both the driver and the passenger in the Siena died at the scene. The box truck driver was taken to an area hospital with major injuries.
CHP says a later scan found that the Toyata Siena had been reported stolen, and its license plate had been stolen from another, similar vehicle.
