A residential and commercial development project that was first proposed for Placer County 20 years ago is finally moving forward. Placer Vineyards has received approval from federal officials to begin construction. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says it'll be the largest single Sacramento area residential project in recent history.

"It would cover more than 5,000 acres in western Placer County with more than 14,000 homes," says Sorich. "Early site work could get underway in spring 2018."

The project was first proposed in 1997. But it stalled after the collapse of the housing market. A lawsuit over potential traffic impacts also hampered developers.

A startup company from the Bay Area says it will expand to Sacramento. Fantag develops a mobile video platform. It allows people to capture and share live events with a mobile phone. Sorich says the company plans to hire three people in Sacramento.

"Additional hiring is planned for later this year," says Sorich. "But we don't know how many people the company will add. This is the next step forward in the Greater Sacramento Economic Council's effort to bring 200 startups here over the next decade."

The council has already attracted startups like SupportPay, which created an app that parents use to pay child support....and Parrable, a company that monitors web user data. Fantag has raised one-and-a-half million dollars in seed capital from investors...including members of the Sacramento Kings' ownership group.

A high-end butcher shop from San Francisco is expanding to Diamond Springs in El Dorado County. Olivier's Butchery sells cuts of meat from the whole animal. Sorich says the business' San Francisco location is very popular.

"Interest in butcher shops has definitely increased in recent years," says Sorich. "Observers say that this is because more people are cooking their own meals and learning about the origins of the ingredients they use, including meat."

The boutique butcher shop plans to open in Diamond Springs by early March. One of the founders of the business says she was drawn to the countryside of the site.
