The presumptive next California Attorney General is halfway through his confirmation process.

The state Assembly voted to confirm Xavier Becerra Friday by a near-party-line vote.

Becerra is the fourth-highest ranking Democrat in Congress. Democratic Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas said that experience will aid the state.

"We really need someone as Attorney General who can understand how we engage with the federal government, who can help us bring more resources here, and who can make sure our common concerns are well-protected," said Ridley-Thomas.

All but one Republican opposed the appointment. The minority party criticized Becerra's support for California's gun control laws and a requirement that crisis pregnancy center's provide information on abortion services, regardless of religious affiliations.

The Senate must still confirm Becerra’s nomination, beginning next week.
