The Lincoln Police Department says one of its deputies shot and killed a man in the McDonald's parking lot at G and Third Streets this morning.

Jill Thompson is a spokeswoman with the City of Lincoln.

She says officers responded to a call of a man with a gun at about 11 Tuesday morning. They did not find the man who was the subject of the complaint, but they did recognize him based on a witness description.

"So they began looking for his vehicle and located it here at the McDonald's parking lot. Once the officer pulled up behind him in the parking lot, the suspect came at him with a knife, and the officer repeatedly old the individual 'Put it down, put it down.' He did not do that and continued to advance towards the officer and the officer had to shoot."

Sharon Leon is a friend of the man who was shot. She says she doesn't know why he would threaten anyone.

"Super good heart. He loved his son. He had a little boy. He's gone through some rough patches, but always had a great smile and all-around good kid. This isn't the way it was supposed to end for him."

The officer has 11 years on the force and is on administrative leave.
