Verizon announced this week it's closing several call centers throughout the country, including one in Rancho Cordova.
Seven-hundred jobs are being cut and another 300 are being relocated. Employees who don't move will get severance packages.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says it's more evidence of the decline in local telecom jobs that began during the Great Recession.
"Back in 2007 the four-county region was a national hub for telecom jobs," says Sorich. "But now, moving forward, we've lost almost half of our telecom-related employment. And that's why experts say it's so critical for the area to diversify it's economy."
Rancho Cordova is encouraging displaced workers to stay in the city which has business parks that employ more than 50,000 people. Verizon says nationwide, the consolidation of its call centers will impact about 3,200 workers.
