A Placer County sheriff's deputy remains in critical condition eight days after a training accident that left him in a medically induced coma.
Dena Erwin is with the Placer County Sheriff's Department. She says there have been some signs of improvement, but that Austin Harper faces a long road to recovery.
"He was running and his head hit a metal beam. He was knocked unconscious and ended up at the hospital, immediately had brain surgery," says Erwin. "This kid was a marine, he's a deputy sheriff, he's young, he's strong, so, and he and his wife were expecting their first child in November. So we're hoping all those things will motivate him in his recovery to get better."
Harper worked as a police officer in Truckee before joining the Placer County Sheriff's Department last December. Erwin says he and his wife are expecting their first child in November.
