(AP) — The rainbow colors of the gay pride flag are flying on the side of the California Capitol and on the floor of the Senate.

Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon said Monday it's the first time the pride flag has flown in the Senate.

The flags are flying in honor of the victims of Sunday's shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, where 49 people were killed and dozens injured.

The pride flag is displayed at the front of the Senate chamber, on a post that often shows the flags of foreign countries when their diplomatic officials visit Sacramento.

Democratic Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens, who is gay, says the attack shows that the three gay and lesbian senators "can be gunned down for simply living our truth."
