California’s population grew by just under one percent last year, according to the state’s Department of Finance.
The 0.9 percent growth in 2015 is in the same range as the last several years of the state’s post-recession economic recovery. It gives California an estimated population of 39,255,883.
The most rapid growth came in San Joaquin, Yolo, Riverside and Santa Clara counties. And for the first time, the city of Los Angeles crossed the four million mark. The biggest decline came in Lassen County, in rural northeastern California.
The state’s housing supply, however, is not keeping up with its population. Housing growth remained largely flat last year. That’s a problem for a state already facing a shortage in affordable housing.
