A Sacramento high school is one of three in the state of California to win an award that celebrates excellence in civic engagement.

Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep High School received the "California Civic Learning Award of Excellence" for its curriculum.

Tyler Micel is a student at the school. This year, he launched a voter-registration drive.

"The history of the Civil Rights Movement and just how hard people have fought to gain the right to vote and to register to vote and I think that being able to exercise that right is a really important part of being an American citizen," Micel says.

As a result of Micel's project, 23 people have registered to vote.

The award is part of California Supreme Court Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye's initiative to encourage schools to effect positive change in their communities.
