(AP) - Officials say six border collie puppies are recovering after they were found abandoned in a Merced dumpster.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the puppies, all from the same litter, are being treated in the veterinary offices of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
SPCA spokeswoman Krista Maloney says a hair salon worker was taking out the trash last week when she saw something move inside another trash bag. When she untied it, she found six puppies.
Veterinarians later determined they were about 4 months old.
Maloney called the treatment of the puppies "incredibly cruel."
She says vets haven't yet completed the puppies' medical evaluations, but they appear to be healthy. The agency is asking for donations to cover vaccines and other expenses.
