4:17 p.m. Southbound 99 near Elk Grove is fully closed until 7 p.m. as the k-rail is being replaced. Traffic is being detoured at Grantline Rd.
Original Post: A big rig crash caused both lanes on southbound Highway 99 to shut down near Eschinger Road Wednesday.
According to CalTrans, a big rig hauling almond hulls overturned on a bridge over the Consumnes River overflow south of Elk Grove. Parts of the trailer and the cab fell in the overflow at about 11 a.m.
A Sig-Alert was issued at 11:20 a.m. and authorities say motorists are being detoured to Grantline Road, which turns into Kammerer Road, to Bruceville Road, to Twin Cities Road and back to southbound Highway 99.
Authorities are recommending that motorists take Interstate 5 as an alternate route.
The second lane is expected to be shut down for about one to two hours, but the remaining lane will be closed through Wednesday evening so crews can fix the damaged guard rail.
