Friday marks the start of the winter season for many in the Sacramento region. The downtown Holiday Ice Rink opens at noon with a special ribbon cutting ceremony and free skating for the day only.
This year marks the 24th season of the rink at the corner of 7th and K Streets. The rink will be open through Jan. 18.
Meanwhile in the mountains Boreal Mountain Resort, at Donner Summit, also opened Friday. Over Halloween weekend Donner Summit was blanketed with up to 10 inches of snow. Another fall weather system is expected to bring more snow to the Lake Tahoe area late this weekend and early next week.
The National Weather Service says snow levels will be dropping to 5,000 feet by Monday with up to seven inches of snow over Sierra passes.
