California, federal and Lake Tahoe fire agencies plan to start prescribed fire operations in the Tahoe Basin this week.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit says operations may take place near Incline Village, Tahoe City, Meyers, Stateline and Zephyr Cove.
Where and when to start a burn depends on the weather, including conditions that allow the smoke to carry up and out of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The operations may continue over the next several weeks as conditions allow.
Smoke from prescribed fire operations is normal and may continue for several days after an ignition depending on the project size and environmental conditions.
The agency uses prescribed fires as a way to reduce fuels that could feed future wildfires.
