Pregnancy Centers Sue To Block Abortion Information Law

(AP) - Abortion opponents have sued the California attorney general's office to block a new law requiring pregnancy centers to provide information about abortion.

The Sacramento Bee says the federal suit was filed Saturday in Sacramento. It contends the bill violates freedom of speech and religion and seeks a court injunction to stop it from taking effect in January.

The law, signed by the governor last week, involves crisis pregnancy centers, which often are run by religiously-affiliated groups that discourage women from getting abortions.

The measure requires the centers to notify patients that California has programs to help them access affordable family planning and abortion services.

The suit was filed by two church-affiliated pregnancy centers in Marysville and Redding.

The attorney general's office says it will defend the law in court.
