The California Assembly has passed legislation that allows people who receive traffic citations to set hearings before paying their fines. The Assembly also approved measures related to debt relief. One would allow consumers to ask a court to set aside a default judgment until they contest their cases. Another would adjust how much salary can be garnished to pay off a debt. All three measures return to the Senate for final votes.
The Senate has approved a bill that prevents local agencies from obtaining federal surplus military equipment without local government approval. It now returns to the Assembly for a final vote.
The Senate also gave final approval to a measure that would require law enforcement agencies to obtain warrants before accessing data on electronic devices. That bill now goes to the governor.
