Davis Extends Smoking Ban To Some Public Areas

(AP) - Smokers won't be able to light up in the city of Davis's downtown plaza and some other public places under an expanded ban.

The Sacramento Bee reports a long-standing rule prohibited smoking within 20 feet of eating areas, public entryways and other outdoor areas. Council members on Tuesday unanimously extended those restrictions to parks, recreational areas and the downtown plaza.

Councilman Lucas Freirich said people complained about smoke in the plaza, which is encircled by restaurants. He also said a few people emailed to say they oppose the extended smoking restrictions.

The cities of San Ramon and Pleasanton have passes similar laws.

In San Rafael, smoking is banned in multi-family housing units. Davis Mayor Dan Wolk says the city is considering a similar measure.
