(AP) - Federal prosecutors have charged a California man in a woman's kidnapping earlier this year that local police called a hoax.
The allegations against 38-year-old Matthew Muller, of Orangevale, California, are contained in an affidavit that the FBI said was unsealed on Monday. He was charged last month.
The FBI says Muller was arrested in June in South Lake Tahoe in connection with a home-invasion robbery that had similarities to the March kidnapping in Vallejo.
The woman's boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, reported that kidnappers broke into the couple's home, took her and demanded thousands of dollars in ransom. She turned up safe two days later.
Vallejo police initially investigated the case as a kidnapping but later called it a hoax.
A call to Vallejo police was not immediately returned.
