Families Sue Over Special Education Teacher's Alleged Abuse

(AP) - Six families are suing a Northern California school district where a special education teacher has been charged with child abuse and battery for allegedly mistreating children in her classroom.

A federal court lawsuit filed Thursday alleges that the Rocklin Unified School District and six of its administrators knew the students were being abused by Sherry Ann McDaniel and failed to intervene.

Placer County prosecutors have charged McDaniel with 14 misdemeanors stemming from reports that she allegedly hit, dragged and improperly restrained the 4th-6th grade students with bungee cords and painter's tape.

The school district released a statement saying it could not comment on the lawsuit and that McDaniel is on unpaid leave

Marsha Bowman, a clerk in the district attorney's office, says McDaniel is set to be arraigned on May 18. Bowman did not know if McDaniel has a lawyer.
