The Placer County Sheriff's Department says it's trying to stop a potentially deadly trend in Auburn: trespassing on the Foresthill Bridge. At 730 feet above the American River canyon, the bridge is one of the highest in the United States.
Dena Erwin with the department says they've seen an increase in people hanging from girders on the bridge.
"There's a catwalk that they can get on to illegally by going through some gates," says Erwin. It's extremely dangerous. We in fact cited 25 people on Sunday alone."
Erwin says some social media sites are promoting the bridge as a place to "girder hang." She says trespassing on the county-owned bridge's catwalk is a misdemeanor.
