Supporters of the State of Jefferson erected a banner outside the state Capitol on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Supporters of the movement to separate far northern California from the rest of the state rallied at the Capitol today. Supporters of the State of Jefferson filed "declarations of separation" with lawmakers. Ginny Rapini lives in Placer County. She says rural areas of California are not fairly represented in the legislature. And she believes state government regulations have gotten out of control.

“The government tells you what kind of light bulb you can have. The government wants your fingerprint to buy ammunition for your guns," she says. "I mean, it has gone way off the Richter chart in overreach of the government into our personal lives. Even more than the federal government, if you can believe that!”

Supporters of the State of Jefferson have been working for decades to separate from California. Actually doing so would require an act of Congress.
