After the success of last year's Farm-to-Fork Celebration in Sacramento, the free festival is expanding to two weeks this year.
The Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau said Friday the community response to the event was overwhelming, with 25,000 people attending the free festival on Capitol Mall.
The Farm-to-Fork Week will now stretch from Sept. 13 to Sept. 28.
“The event includes a restaurant week, a wine event and the festival on the Capitol Mall is back,” said Mike Testa, senior vice president with the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The festival includes farmers, animals, food trucks and microbrews.”
Testa said there will also be farm tours, dinners on farms and specials at area restaurants during the two week event.
Testa says the event is also about education.
"We want to be a leader not only in food but everything that comes with it,” said Testa. “So when you talk about Farm-to-Fork-to-Farm and the recycling aspect of food that's one thing that this region should be leading the nation in because the details are applicable to every city in this country.”
Testa said the Farm-to-Fork Celebration is part of a year-round effort to promote California as the largest agriculture producing state in the U.S., with many of the crops produced in the Sacramento region.
He said 600 tickets for a dinner at the Tower Bridge last year sold out in six hours. Testa said tickets for this year’s dinner go on sale Monday and the money helps fund the free events at the celebration.
