Stockton Officer Who Died After On-Duty Crash Mourned

Thursday, June 12, 2014 | Sacramento, CA | Permalink

(AP) - A Central California police officer has died two weeks after an on-duty car accident.

Stockton police spokesman Officer Joseph Silva said Wednesday that 33-year-old Officer Scott Hewell was the passenger in a patrol car May 28 driven by another officer that hit a tree in the center median. The two were on their way to help arrest a shooting suspect.

Silva tells the Record newspaper that both officers were badly hurt, and that firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove them from the wreckage. The other officer is recovering from his injuries.

Silva said Hewell was a graduate of San Francisco State University and that he joined the Stockton Police Department in 2012.
