Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein is praising the agreement but says she hopes lawmakers can avoid this sort of brinksmanship going forward.

“And in a way it’s a big lesson in itself: let us not go there again. And let us use this three to four month period in a wise and willing way,” said Feinstein.

Many Republicans who previously opposed such a compromise have dropped their opposition.  But not all of them are pleased with the deal.  Northern California Congressman Tom McClintock says he's disappointed his party backed down from its demands.  He  says it was good for his party to try and delay the Affordable Care Act.

“That was damage that was simply too awful to contemplate and now it’s dead ahead of us,” said McClintock.

He says Republicans like him held out to shield their constituents from the law.
