Under state law, current and former state employee names and salaries are public information. Earlier this week, CalPERS announced it would post that information online.
“This new proposal is scaring all of us,” says California State Retirees President Tim Behrens. He says his group is pushing for legislation to protect pensioners’ identities.
“The state employees that we represent are all senior citizens and are the most vulnerable citizens in the state of California when it comes to personal information.”
CalPERS spokesman Robert Glazier says the system is backing off on its plan, at least for now.
“We have no desire to put anything out that’s not required, so if the law will change and there will be a more restrictive requirement, we’d be supportive of that,” he says
CalPERS will wait on the legislatures’ next move.
