A levee improvement project has begun on the Feather River about 12 miles south of Yuba City.
The Sutter Butte Flood Control Agency has begun work on a two-mile section of the Feather River south of Star Bend.
Chuck Smith with Sutter County says the work is in area of the river that is higher than normal because of heavy rains and releases from Lake Oroville.
"This work is not being done on a levee that's in any immediate danger, but it's in an area where there's historic seepage," says Smith.
He also says the repair is part of a 44-mile-long project to protect the Yuba City Basin from the kind of flooding that happened across the river 20 years ago.
"Most of it is armored with an impermeable slurry wall down the middle of the levee," says Smith. "The levee is in much better shape than it was in 1997 and that slurry wall is performing remarkably well."
This two mile section is east of Laurel Avenue and Highway 99.
According to Smith, the project will cost about $5 million.
