The most recent data compiled by the Sacramento Police Department show 1,500 more crimes were committed this year compared to the same time last year.
The department has not determined a cause for the 11 percent increase in crimes.
To respond to high-crime areas, the department has re-allocated its gang-suppression task force and crime-prevention units.
Officer Justin Brown says crime prevention discussions have begun.
"As far as future plans, that's something that our department is in discussions about. We'll talk to city leaders, including the mayor, and we'll determine what is the most effective way to address these issues."
Police department managers are tentatively scheduled to meet with the Mayor sometime this week to discuss the spike in crime.
There have been 33 homicides so far this year, up from 24 last year.
Rape, robbery, assault, and vehicle thefts are all up by more than 20 percent.
