The U.S. Department of Transportation held a traffic summit in Sacramento Friday for northern California and Nevada cities to discuss how people and products will move in the future.
About 140 people from transportation-related agencies met at Sacramento State this morning to talk about a 30-year plan to reduce congestion, reduce carbon emissions, increase the use of technology and pay for projects.
The area from Reno to San Francisco has been identified as one of 11 "mega regions" in the country. Mike McKeever is CEO of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments.
"The upside of breaking down those boundaries, realizing that we have a shared destiny and that if we want to recover, not just recover from this recession, but thrive into the future absoulutely is going to require a partnership within the mega region and a partnership between our mega region and the federal agencies," he says. "The boundary issues with the federal government of getting all those agencies in alignment to work to help a place like a mega region succeed are substantial,"
The Department of Transportation says the amount of money required to improve roads, bridges, and public transportation projects in the U.S. in the next five years is $163 billion which is $63 billion less than what has been allocated.
