County elections offices are sending out their vote-by-mail ballots this week. But voters in the 1st State Senate District won't get them right away. That's because of the tight timeline in the special election to replace State Senator Dave Cox, who died earlier this year. Placer and El Dorado Counties are running a couple of days behind schedule; Sacramento County, up to a week.
Meantime, Sacramento is also the only local county whose vote-by-mail ballots will cost extra to return. Here's Brad Buyse with the elections department:
Buyse: "Back in the primary, it was the normal postage rate. But seeing that we have more contests on the ballot, it's going to be 61 cents for you to return your ballot to us."
Yolo, Placer and El Dorado County voters will only need a regular 44-cent stamp.
