Penumbra Expected To Expand In Roseville
A med-tech company from the East Bay Area may soon be bringing more jobs to Roseville. The company is called Penumbra. And the Sacramento Business Journal's Sonya Sorich says Roseville city officials anticipate the company will create around 1,200 jobs.
"Penumbra is currently remodeling a Roseville office space that formerly housed Hewlett Packard,” says Sorich. “It will become a new manufacturing space for the Alameda-based company's products, which include stroke intervention devices. The company expects it'll begin operations in Roseville by 2020."
Initially, Penumbra is expected to bring in 250 jobs during its first three years operating in Roseville. The company currently has about 2,200 employees, many of them at its headquarters in Alameda.
Roseville Automall Losing Two Dealerships
Another car dealership is closing at the Roseville Automall. AutoNation shut down its Mazda dealership last weekend. The company hasn't commented on why. Sorich says the closure comes only weeks after notice that another dealership will also be shutting its doors.
"Kuni Enterprises is closing its Roseville Volkswagen dealership in the automall this summer,” says Sorich. “The closure will cost 60 jobs."
The VW dealership in Roseville is on one of the smaller pads in the automall, compared to spacious dealerships like Toyota, Ford and Chevrolet. Executives at the automall say they're not worried about the closures. A business manager says dealerships often change with the industry, and the automall remains a highly desirable location.
Cookie Connection Closing Stores
There was another significant business closure this week: Cookie Connection has apparently shut down.
“It appears the company has closed all its cookie stores,” says Sorich. “Cookie Connection most recently had five local sites, and a location in Irvine. We don't know why the stores closed, but it’s worth noting that the California Secretary of State has suspended the company, according to online records.”
The company just opened a midtown Sacramento location in April at the Ice Blocks, which makes these closures even more surprising.
Calling All Dreamers Finalists Announced
Sacramento's Calling All Dreamers competition announced its semi-finalists this week. This is the annual contest that helps the winner open a retail storefront downtown. Sorich says 10 business concepts were selected.
"It's, as usual, an interesting mix of business ideas including food, a custom bow-tie business, there is a nail salon that apparently will offer a pedicure that includes Patron tequila,” says Sorich. “And there's even an ax-throwing business."
The semi-finalists will now work with mentors to fine-tune their ideas. The top concepts will later move on to a public voting phase of the competition. The winner will be announced in September. Previous winners include Andy's Candy Apothecary and Oblivion Comics and Coffee. The contest is presented by the Downtown Sacramento Foundation, a sister organization of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.
