A report from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says the crime rate is down 24 percent between last year and 2013.
This finding is part of a five-year “crime reporting analysis” released today by the department.
Other findings include:
- Property crimes have decreased every year
- Violent crimes have decreased every year except for 2015
- Between 2013 and 2017, the number of crimes dipped 21 percent, from 15,109 to 11,895
- The crime rate, or the total crimes per 100,000 residents, decreased by nearly one-fourth (24 percent). The crime rate takes into account a 3-percent increase in population
- The decrease in property crimes was most notable in burglaries, which showed a 42.6 percent drop
- Motor vehicle thefts were up 60 percent — thefts have increased in three of the last four years.
- The total number of homicides fluctuated, up from 30 in 2013 to 47 in 2014, and then back down to 31 last year.
Sgt. Shaun Hampton says the department credits the decrease to a plan to assist parolees and probationers under Gov. Jerry Brown's realignment program.
"We have many programs out there to help inmates that are currently in custody and received sentences get back into society and be gainfully employed, obtain some type of skill that can get them a job while they're out there in the community,” he said.
Correction: A previous version of the story misstated the percentage of the crime rate decrease and the incidents of burglaries
