A new future is in the works for the Mansion Inn - a long-vacant hotel across the street from the Governor's Mansion in downtown Sacramento. It's at 1601 H Street. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says there's a buyer.
"It sold for more than $5 million to Sacramento's SKK Developments and The Grupe Company of Stockton," says Sorich. "SKK and Grupe also bought the former hotel's parking lot for $2.4 million."
The building - which also operated as a Clarion Hotel - closed in 2012. Two separate projects are in the works: a new boutique hotel and a multifamily residential project expected to include 95-units.
A well-known Sacramento soul food restaurant - Sandra Dee's Barbecue and Seafood - recently got a makeover when a celebrity chef came to town. Sorich says it's part of the chef's new reality TV show titled: "Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back."
"He visits a restaurant, finds problems and then tries to fix those problems in a 24-hour period," says Sorich. "And apparently that's what happened at Sandra Dee's. Now it's unclear how many of these changes will stick around at that restaurant. And if we want more details on the specifics we'll have to wait until the summer to watch the episode."
Sandra Dee's used to be one of the few places you could get barbecue and Southern food in Sacramento. But that's changed with the recent arrival of several new players in the local restaurant scene.
The Sacramento beer scene has gained a couple of new breweries. Sorich says one is called Thin Line Brewing Company. It's in Rancho Cordova and it honors first responders with beer names like "The Rookie" and "Night Watch."
"And on a somewhat similar note, it appears a new military-themed brewery is planning a taproom in midtown Sacramento," says Sorich. "At Ease Brewing Company is planning to open next to the Mill Coffee Shop on I Street."
Analysts say the brewery scene is getting more competitive and new businesses have to stand out from the crowd. That often means targeting specific groups with themes ranging from law enforcement to pirates.
