More than 80 water skiers are competing this weekend at their season-ending championship event in Sacramento.
If you can hold on to a rope behind a boat at 30 miles an hour as you reach out with your feet to clear a course of buoys set up in a slalom course, you can enter next year's California Waterski ProAm.
Amateurs, professionals and seniors are all competing this weekend.
Friday morning Sherri Kerth from Sacramento took her turns on Bell Acqua Lake in Rio Linda and was pleased with her results.
"My neighbor down the street was a competitive water skier, the whole family," Kerth said. "And I was always an ice skater. One day it was hot and I was walking to the rink and they said, 'Come out skiing!' And I was 18 and never looked back after that."
With each pass, the competitors have less rope to hang on to and must lean more to reach the buoys.
"This weekend, we're expecting some of the best skiing. Hopefully, we'll set a new world record here," tournament director Greg Badal said "We have the potential of doing it. Great boats, awesome site, best skiers in the world."
Admission is free, though organizers are asking for a $5 parking donation. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the competition.
