New Episodes: Keys to the House Podcast

For Democrats to win California’s battleground congressional races that could decide which party controls the House of Representatives next year, they’ll have to do two really challenging things: Turn out minority and younger voters who rarely cast ballots in midterm elections, and convince Republicans who are disgusted with President Trump to take the seemingly unheard of step of kicking their own party out of power.

Those are the two questions that CapRadio’s Ben Adler and Sally Schilling set out to explore this month during a trip to Orange County on our congressional podcast Keys To The House.

Two new episodes:

The O.C. Part 1: Diverse Democrats

The O.C. Part 2: Rebellious Republicans

Second Saturday Reception: Psychedelic Psacramento

K-ZAP, Sacramento’s original rock station, celebrates 50 years. Join Capital Public Radio for a unique exhibit of poster art and memorabilia spanning five decades of music.

This special collection commemorates K-ZAP’s historical and musical milestones by way of handbills, photos, LP’s - and even a montage of ticket-stubs. Recognizable works by well-known poster artist Roger Shepherd add vibrancy to the display. The station, which formed in the 70’s and was resurrected in the early 2000’s, showcases an extensive array of artists from The Band and Led Zeppelin to Tom Petty, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Clark Jr. and more.

K-ZAP’s mix of old and new rock classics can be heard on CapRadio on Saturdays as the start of our “Saturday Night Block Party” – a five hour stretch of music programming beginning at 7 PM. Indie, eclectic music discovery show Hey, Listen! follows through 10 PM, with Acid Jazz rounding out the evening.

Join us for a Second Saturday reception:

Saturday, November 10th
4 PM - 6 PM.

Looking For Classical CD Recommendations? Kevin Doherty and Other Hosts Offer Their Pics In A New Series

American Public Media has introduced a new online feature for classical music lovers called Major Themes. Each month classical music hosts from around the country recommend what they consider "must hear" recordings. We're delighted to report CapRadio's morning classical host Kevin Doherty has been asked to join the team.

In this month's Major Themes Kevin spotlights Mirror in Mirror by violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. Says Kevin of the CD, "With an emphasis on the ambient and minimalist genres and a smattering of electronics, Mirror in Mirror is a solid reflection of the sounds of the late 20th and early 21st centuries."

Read more from Kevin and the other hosts about their pics and listen to the tracks at CapRadio.org/majorthemes.

#NextGenRadio Students at CapRadio!

Last month, six students learned from the best as part of the Next Generation Radio Project.

The Next Generation Radio Project is a week-long digital journalism training project designed to give competitively selected participants, who are interested in radio and journalism, the skills and opportunity to report and produce their own multimedia story.

The week culminated with a graduation presentation of each of their final projects.

You're a Member...and We'd Like to Know You Better

You've chosen to support CapRadio...but we might not even know what program is your favorite. Doesn't seem right, does it?

Please take a brief moment to tell us your favorite station...and whether you favor Jazz or Classical Music...or the News. We'd also like to hear about the particular programs or podcasts that keep you tuning in.

And THANK YOU. We promise this will be painless.

3 Questions for You

Got a Question? We're Listening!
We're starting a new project at CapRadio and as an engaged listener, we want you to be a part of it before we launch it to the public.

Tell us what you’ve always wondered about our region. From there, we’ll assign a reporter to dig into your questions, and invite you to help them along the way.

We think this is going to be fun. But, more importantly, we think we’re all going to learn a lot. Because we know you have great questions!

Big Thanks for a Successful Fall Member Campaign

In September we conducted our Music Station Member Drive, and in October was our News Station Member Drive.

Overall, more than $500,000 was contributed by about 3,500 listeners who donated online or over the phone.

“It was one of the most generous responses by our audience,” said Director of Membership, Jennifer Halm. “We do our best to make our on-air fundraising listenable, but we were truly humbled by the response. The Student Musician Showcase on CapRadio Music, and the recording of our ‘sticker correspondent’ on CapRadio News must have captured hearts.”

Thank you for supporting CapRadio...whether you gave last month, or earlier this year. And, if you are wondering if you might be a prize winner, know that we are actively contacting the individuals whose names were drawn. We’ll be posting confirmed winners at CapRadio.org/winners in the next couple of weeks.

Consider the IRA Charitable Rollover Option

If you are 70½ years old and the IRS requires that you take a minimum distribution annually from your IRA, but you do not need the extra income, please read further…

Making a gift directly from your IRA to CapRadio is a wonderful way to extend your generosity and avoid paying income taxes on that distribution. To qualify for a tax-free IRA Charitable Rollover, your gift must be made before year-end and your IRA administrator must initiate the gift and send it directly to CapRadio. You can even give more than your Required Minimum Distribution – up to $100,000 annually. This option also applies your spouse’s IRA, provided it is in a separate account.

For more information on how to take advantage of this tax-smart option, please contact your IRA plan administrator.
