CapRadio Wins Two PRNDI Awards for Its Reporting

We are excited to announce that Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) presented us with two awards for our reporting at this year's conference:

  • First Place for Continuing Coverage: Stephon Clark

  • Second Place for Sports Feature: Second Best

Linnea Edmeier, Managing Editor for News and Information, was at the conference to accept the awards. "Being recognized for covering traumatic or challenging events is at once rewarding, yet sobering," says Edmeier. "We are grateful that our journalism was noted by PRNDI and extremely proud to accept the award for Continuing Coverage as a team." CapRadio's Stephon Clark coverage is available here.

The Sports Feature created by Nick Miller and Chris Hagan covers the history and failure of the 2nd overall pick in the NBA draft, and how that may impact the Sacramento Kings. "Our newsroom is checkered with athletes and sports fans, so it's not unusual to hear interesting conversations about professional sports in here," says Edmeier. "It's great when those casual meanderings happen upon great stories." Second Best is available here.

With more than 5 million related posts on Instagram, the nomadic #vanlife lifestyle seems to be gaining traction.

Fact Check: Did Kamala Harris Really Disagree With Obama's Deportation Policy?

At the Democratic debate on Thursday, June 27, California Sen. Kamala Harris claimed that, during her time as the state’s attorney general, she "disagreed" with President Obama’s use of the Secure Communities program that partnered local and federal authorities to deport people who were in the country illegally. Politifact California reporter Chris Nichols fact checked the claim to find out if it was accurate.

Wildfires Resources: How to Prepare, Tracking the Latest Fires & More

California's wildfire season has been growing longer, deadlier and more destructive every year. After last year's wildfire season, we asked our audiences what information would be most helpful before wildfire season began. We received a lot of feedback, and we've responded with resources to help the communities we serve understand and prepare for the next wildfire:

We'll continue to provide more information and updates throughout the year. You can always find the latest information on our wildfire hub page.

395 Podcast: Exploring the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport

The town of Bridgeport off Highway 395 is known mostly for its historic courthouse, stunning mountain views and as a gateway to the outdoors. But down the road is a little-known landmark that plays a key role in testing Marines before they deploy to America's longest war. In this episode of 395, we speak to base commander Colonel Kevin Hutchison and explore the Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Don't miss our live author interview with Elaine Castillo on Thursday, July 18 at 6:00 pm. Castillo will discuss her debut novel, America Is Not the Heart, which is a fierce, heartbreaking story that traces the promises and limitations of the American dream over three generations in one family.
