Governor Gavin Newsom's State of the State
California Governor Gavin Newsom is preparing to give his first State of the State address on Tuesday, February 12 at 11:00am. It will be an update on how California is doing and where Newsom wants to take the state during his first year in office. Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler and the CapRadio News team are preparing for special live coverage, this year in collaboration with KQED. We’ll bring you the speech along with analysis and reaction on-air and on capradio.org.

Meantime, check out our one-of-a-kind archive of past State of the State addresses with transcripts and audio dating back to 2004. It's an invaluable reference, or just a fun look back at the substance and style of previous California governors.

History of California Wildfires [Interactive Map]
At the end of 2018, digital content producer Emily Zentner pitched an idea to create a visual map of California wildfire perimeters from the earliest historical record. Working with senior editor Chris Hagan, Emily embarked on a nearly six-week project to make this idea come to life.

The project started by obtaining a massive data set from Cal Fire's website of 20,000 wildfire perimeters dating back to 1878. To ensure quality, Emily performed two main tasks:
  • Reviewed each entry to "clean" the data - fixing things like misspelled names and dates.
  • Contacted Cal Fire's data librarian, David Passovoy, to discuss the data and note its limitations.
Since Cal Fire has not yet released data past 2017, Emily gathered 2018 data from the U.S. Geological Survey. However, each fire was in its own file, so she had to download and refine nearly 90 individual files and merge them with the Cal Fire data.

Once the data was ready, Chris worked on bringing it to life using mapping software, then coding it into a special projects webpage on the CapRadio site. Now live, Emily and Chris created a highly accurate and interactive visual map of wildfires in California.

Stay Tuned: The project's not done, however, as Emily is now gathering data on the causes, acreage and method of perimeter collection for all the fires to update the map.

Special Collaboration: Investigative Report on Rio Vista Police Misconduct Files
CapRadio's Nadine Sebai was part of a special collaboration with KQED, the Bay Area News Group and Investigative Studios that scrutinized and reported on the release of The Rio Vista Police Department internal files on police misconduct. The Department's investigative records released under a new California law, SB 1241, are the first in the state that offer an in-depth look at how officers are disciplined for violating use-of-force rules and for dishonesty.

It’s an eye-opening story of police abuse of power that law enforcement wanted to keep away from the public. Although it remains to be seen whether such misconduct is rare or widespread, one expert made it clear that the disclosures offer a glimpse into what "has been a hidden world" in California, where most officer discipline was confidential for decades until the new law took effect Jan. 1.
Investigative Report

Listen to Nadine Sebai from CapRadio, Sukey Lewis from KQED and Thomas Peele from the Bay Area News Group explain a collaborative effort to collect and analyze these records for the first time on Insight With Beth Ruyak. They’ll also share some of the stories they’ve already reported in the first month of this new law.

You Asked About PG&E, We Answered
CapRadio's Great Question! is where we invite you to be part of the reporting process. We asked for your questions about the utility and its future, and then worked to find the answers. Some of the questions we answered include:

How will retirees from PG&E be impacted by potential changes?

Why can't the state of California make the utility a public one after the history of incompetence and malfeasance goes back to the '70s?

Why don't we have options when it comes to power utilities?

Check out all of your PG&E questions and our answers here. Learn more about our Great Question! program here

Beth Ruyak's Not-Dying Girl Documentary
Lauren McCullough was a spirited, competitive Elk Grove teenager who had just graduated from high school when she was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma, which she documented in her blog The Not-Dying Girl.

In December 2013, after hearing about her incredible journey to survive, Beth invited Lauren to join her on Insight. You might remember their powerful conversation; Lauren's honesty and her message for change touched people everywhere. Lauren came back to join Beth in January 2014 to discuss the reality of her circumstances; that was Lauren's final time on Insight, as she passed away later that year.

"Lauren's life and advocacy were so powerful. I felt compelled to tell her story in this way from the very first moments that I met and listened to her," Beth explained. "The Not-Dying Girl is a documentary about Lauren McCullough and the uphill battle to fund and pursue treatments for childhood cancer. I believe that both are compelling, and both are worthy of our attention, compassion and support."

You can view The Not Dying Girl premiere this Wednesday at 7:00pm on KVIE, your local PBS station. Missed the premiere? Check it out online (available later this week).

Calling All Artists: Submit Artwork for Our Print Radio Contest
It’s time again for Print Radio, CapRadio’s annual design competition. This year’s focus is on music discovery programs Hey, Listen! and NPR’s Tiny Desk. Each year, these programs feature, explore, interview and support musicians from around the region and across the globe. We’re asking artists to do the same through design.

Artists are invited to submit poster art that incorporates the ideas of “music discovery,” “CapRadio” and “Tiny Desk.” Select pieces will go on display at CapRadio in the spring and winning designs will be printed and immortalized on concert swag at our second annual Tiny Desk Sacramento concert in June. It might also be worth mentioning that there are cash prizes :)
