An Inside Look at CapRadio, Exclusively for Members
|
|
| | | Wildfire Coverage | On November 8, the devastating Camp Fire surged through Butte County, destroying much of the town of Paradise and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. It is now the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history.
Since it started, CapRadio’s News team has been engaged in a fast-paced and non-stop reporting cycle to ensure that we're providing the latest information about the wildfires. Our comprehensive coverage also includes useful resources on how to help victims of the Camp wildfire, discussions about air quality and how it affects your health, and long-term community impacts. We even have an FAQ about wildfires from our Managing Editor, Linnea Edmeier, whose previous experience includes over a decade with CAL FIRE, where she served as a fire captain.
You can find all of our coverage on the wildfire resource hub.

| | | | Newly Launched Podcast: The Drive Examines the Personal Stories of Local Leaders |
Capital Public Radio, in collaboration with American Leadership Forum, presents The Drive, a podcast that takes an inside look at the personal lives of leaders from around the Sacramento region.
Hosted by Katie McCleary, founder of the non-profit 916 Ink and principal of Paper Wings Creative, The Drive discovers the driving forces behind leaders by delving into their past experiences and exploring the personal stories that shaped their lives.
The first of six episodes debuted on November 15, with weekly releases planned until December 20. Subscribe now with Apple Podcasts or Podcast RSS. |
| Episode 1 - Faith Whitmore: As a young pastor, Faith was assigned to a congregation in a small California foothill town. The locals told her they didn’t want a young single woman to lead them… | | Episode 2 - William Ishmael: William's journey has taken him from Kentucky to Sacramento, where he went from being a happily married, straight civil engineer to being a happily married, gay artist in California. | | Episode 3 - Marco Rodriguez: As a young man traveling from Mexico, Marco faced many challenges in America. Fifteen years later, he found himself a paraplegic and serving former President George W. Bush. | |

| | | | The Mayors’ Forum on Homelessness and Housing |
On November 16, we brought together mayors from four of California’s largest cities – Mayor Darrell Steinberg (Sacramento), Mayor Eric Garcetti (Los Angeles), Mayor Libby Schaaf (Oakland) and Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer (San Diego) – for an in-person discussion on the topic of homelessness and housing shortages.
The mayors discussed how they are currently addressing homelessness in their cities and what they think California must do in the future to help resolve this growing crisis in the state. Our Digital News team was there to capture the discussion on video and podcast. View the live-recorded discussion here.
The Forum is part of CapRadio’s CA Dream collaboration with CALmatters, KQED, KPBS and KPCC, which is focused on key issues of economic opportunity, quality of life and the future of the “California Dream.”

| | | | Coverage of Historic Midterm Election | With on-the-ground reporting in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Modesto, Reno, Stockton and Amador/Calaveras/Tuolumne counties, the CapRadio News team ran on all cylinders - and all night long - during the midterm elections. The election coverage was more robust than ever, too. Linnea Edmeier, managing editor for news and information, brought the BBC into our Sacramento newsroom to coordinate their California election coverage and participate in cross-coverage interviews. Chris Hagan, senior editor of digital content, ran our election live blog to break the latest election news. Randol White, All Things Considered anchor and reporter, oversaw our Facebook Live segments that covered election night in Sacramento and gave a behind-the-scenes look at our newsroom.

| | Keys To The House Podcast | On election night, it seemed like Democrats in California were going to flip perhaps a few of the seven Republican-held seats they were targeting in the House of Representatives. However, three weeks later, the Democrats have seemingly flipped all seven - not only turning all of Orange County blue but also two seats in the Central Valley.
In our final Keys To The House episode, releasing tonight, Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler talks with political experts about how this happened and what this means for California’s two major political parties.

| | | | Impact and Results of the Rural Suicide Project |
From February to September this year, CapRadio undertook a long-term, engagement-centric project about suicide and mental health in Amador County, which has the third highest suicide rate in the state, to report on the issue, raise awareness among residents, and create resources to support dialogue and education.
CapRadio spent significant time within the Amador community getting to know its residents, which included multiple town hall style discussions among other community involvement activities. CapRadio also partnered with Amador County Behavioral Health for this project, which saw its contact lists grow by 50% since they started working with our team.
Additionally, lead reporter Sammy Caiola and engagement specialist jesikah maria ross created a Public Conversation Kit that Amador County Behavioral Health now uses in suicide prevention trainings and as part of their suicide prevention coalition.
After project completion, a survey of residents found:
- 86% either agreed or strongly agreed that they are more aware of the high suicide rate in Amador County and why it’s happening.
- 83% either agreed or strongly agreed that they learned about barriers rural residents face in accessing mental health services, including suicide prevention.
- 88% either agreed or strongly agreed that they are motivated to address challenges facing Amador County and its ability to lower its suicide rate.
