Dear friend,
As a valued CapRadio listener and supporter of NPR, I wanted to provide more information and context regarding the news about NPR layoffs.
In a recent article, NPR announced that it is planning to lay off 10% of its workforce — approximately 100 staff — due to a larger-than-anticipated budget deficit caused by a sharp decline in sponsorship revenue and the tough financial outlook for the media industry as a whole. This is somber news, and we sympathize with our NPR colleagues who are navigating this difficult situation. As a loyal public radio listener and fan, here’s what this means for you and CapRadio, your local NPR Member station.
CapRadio is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means that our financial situation is not tied to NPR. NPR funding comes from two primary sources — fees from Member stations like CapRadio to cover the cost of NPR programs, such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and sponsorship revenue.
For CapRadio, our primary source of funding comes from individual members like you. While we still feel the effects of lower sponsorship revenue, it does not have the same impact on us as it does for NPR. As long as we continue to have strong member support — and we have some of the most committed members throughout all of public radio — we will be in a much better position to weather economic challenges.
There are still a lot of unknowns regarding NPR’s financial situation and upcoming layoffs and how that may affect programming and content. As we stay apprised of the situation, we will be sure to communicate with you if there is an impact to our services.
Regardless of NPR’s financial situation and the economy at large, our commitment to public service never stops. We are all navigating challenging times, but our staff is dedicated to making sure you have the news, music and entertainment you rely on. And thank you for your support. As a CapRadio member, your important contributions help both CapRadio and NPR to continue serving your community every day.
With warm regards,
Jun Reina CapRadio General Manager
