Live Author Interview With Alka Joshi

Join CapRadio and host Donna Apidone for a virtual author interview with Alka Joshi about her debut novel, The Henna Artist, a New York Times bestseller.

Joshi takes readers to 1950's India, where 17-year-old Lakshmi escapes an arranged and abusive marriage to start a new life in Jaipur as a henna artist — and confidante — to the city's upper-caste elite women. In this complex society, she must work cautiously to build and protect her reputation from the "gossip-eaters" who spread humiliation like oil.

About the Author

Alka Joshi was born in Rajasthan, India, before her family immigrated to America in 1967. After running an advertising and marketing agency for 30 years, Joshi found herself inspired to write her debut novel after questioning how her mother's life would have been different if she hadn't had an arranged marriage at 18. Wanting to give her mother life without all of the cultural restrictions that she was forced to observe and give to her back her decision-making power, Joshi spent ten years writing her debut novel.
