Campaign Donor Outreach Sep 2023

Dear xxxx

As a generous donor to our CapRadio Reimagined campaign, we want you to hear directly from us about our current situation. Here are some key details that we would like to share with you:

The CSU Chancellor’s Office Audit

  • This week, the CSU Chancellor’s Office released an organizational audit that provides important guidance on the financial and administrative processes that CapRadio and Sacramento State need to follow in order to fully adhere to CSU auxiliary protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Our Board and leadership take these findings seriously and will actively address recommendations to take CapRadio forward on strong footing — in cooperation  with our Sacramento State partners.

Current Financial Situation

  • We are experiencing cash flow concerns that have been caused by a number of factors. In particular, the pandemic slowed our ability to fundraise while construction for the CapRadio Reimagined projects went forward amidst cost increases, creating financial strain.
  • Additionally, we are facing the same financial pressures as our public media colleagues around the country because broadcast audiences are declining and  membership giving has slowed.
  • We recently announced layoffs and said farewell to some talented and dedicated colleagues. This was devastating for us and many of our listeners, but it was a necessary step towards becoming a leaner, more agile organization.

The Move Downtown

  • Because of your support, we will be moving into our new headquarters and broadcast center downtown in early 2024, and we will open the CapRadio Live performance venue in the same timeframe.
  • Your generosity has also allowed us to relocate and complete construction on the new KXPR 88.9 FM broadcast tower, which will improve signal quality and reach a larger classical and jazz music audience.

Search for Permanent President & General Manager

  • Our Board of Directors is conducting a national search for a new president and general manager to lead CapRadio into the future and is expected to make an announcement before year-end.
  • CapRadio is currently being led by interim general manager Tom Karlo. An experienced public media veteran, Tom is working with our Board and Sacramento State to make operational adjustments that will strengthen processes and streamline our finances. Sac State is providing critical financial expertise during this transitional time.

The current moment is challenging all of us who love CapRadio to focus our talents and resources toward ensuring our future as a mission-driven public media organization. You are an invaluable partner in helping us create a more informed, engaged and inspired community — but we also expect you to ask the tough questions and hold us accountable. We are standing by to talk with you about any concerns you may have by phone, email or in person.

With gratitude for your support,
Tom Karlo
