1. Christian McBride, “Ham Hocks and Cabbage,” Out Here
I reviewed this album when it was released and loved the lead-off track. It hasn’t lost its luster a year later. This one might be a better track for cooking. If you try to listen when you eat you might bob your head too much and choke. (CapRadioMusic is looking out for you.)
(And check out this video of the trio talking about making the album. It’s part of a three-part series, but I especially love this part.)
2. Rosemary Clooney, “Come On-A My House,” The Very Best of Rosemary Clooney
Harpsichord is usually used in classical music, but heck with “usually.” Here it gets a chance to swing. Rosemary Clooney offers a variety of sweets in this invitational song. This one’s good for the appetizer.
3. Dexter Gordon, “Cheesecake,” Go!
This is from one of my favorite albums of all time. I almost automatically trust everything from Dex and Blue Note in general. After 75 years, you can’t go wrong. (Again, be careful with the not-choking thing. This one might put you in the risky place.)
4. Lee Morgan, “Cornbread,” Cornbread
If you’re looking for something with a solid beat, try anything from the hard-bop era (very roughly ‘50s-ish through ‘60s-ish). Lee Morgan is one of the best head-bob-inducing musicians in jazz history. You’ll be hungry from all the dancing.
5. Stanley Turrentine, “Sugar,” Sugar
Warning, this song is about 10 minutes long. BUT, it’s worth it. (Sorry, I have a short attention span and don’t really go for long songs. This is an exception.)
