Sound from 60-70 microphones in Del Paso Heights will pick up sounds. The sound of gunfire is supposed to alert a private firm, who then would alert police.

The Sacramento Police Department’s gunfire tracking system called ShotSpotter located two shootings New Year's Eve. Both were in north Sacramento.

Police helicopter pilots say they used the technology to locate a man shooting a rifle into the air just before midnight.  A search of the backyard found three guns and used casings. Police say the man admitted firing the guns and was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm.

ShotSpotter also located a shooting at a north Sacramento home. Police officers found a stolen handgun and drugs. One person was arrested on narcotic and weapons-related charges.

Sacramento recently began using the new technology. Stockton announced this week that it is also using ShotSpotter to pinpoint reports of gunfire.
