A controversial development project in East Sacramento has been approved by the Sacramento City Council, but it comes with some changes.
The McKinley Village would create 336 single and multi-family homes. They would be in a low-lying area southeast of the Cap City Freeway and northeast of A Street. Pollution from the freeway and idling trains is a concern for people like Rob Finley.
"We support infill development," says Finley. "We support new neighbors and new children in our schools. But we cannot support a development with poorly-planned access because it's the best they can do."
Rosalind Van Buren also lives in East Sacramento. She says the neighborhood will benefit from the development.
"It's gonna generate money for our schools," says Van Buren. "It's gonna provide the jobs for families and the infill growth that we need for Sacramento."
Developer Phil Angelides will pay more than $2 million toward construction of a tunnel under adjacent railroad tracks. The tunnel project will be managed by the City so it can apply for state and federal grants.
The City will also work to implement new rules regarding train idling.
