On Sunday, March 18, 2018, Stephon Clark was shot and killed by two Sacramento police officers. On Wednesday, March 21, 2018, Sacramento Police released body camera and helicopter video of the shooting. Following that, protesters filled the streets of Sacramento, demanding charges against the two officers and changes to police procedures.

Here’s are some of the major developments since:

  • The city of Sacramento will pay $2.4 million to the two children of Stephon Clark as part of a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in January 2019.
  • Nearly a year and a half after Stephon Clark's death, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that changes the legal use of force standard in California from “reasonable” to “necessary.”
  • Sacramento County District Attorney Anne-Marie Schubert announced March 2 that her office would not file criminal charges against the two police officers who fatally shot Stephon Clark. Days later, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra also found that there was not sufficient evidence to support charging the officers with a crime.
We'll be continuing to cover this story as it develops. Check back here for the latest updates, conversations and analysis.
