There's a new record for campaign spending on propositions in California: more than $450 million, when you add up donations to campaigns on both sides of the 17 statewide ballot measures.
It can be difficult to track campaign contributions in California, even though the state requires their disclosure. Open government groups, lawmakers and big-money interests in the state have agreed to a solution for future elections.

More than $185 million has already poured in for and against the 17 measures on California's November ballot. Experts say the money can distort the facts about the measures, but also note campaigns with the most cash don't necessarily win.
