Washington Post opinion columnist Catherine Rampell sparked a heated debate about government social spending when she wrote a column about who benefits most, and who really pays for it.
Rampell says seniors on Medicare these days receive more in benefits than they paid into the system, and that’s money not spent on programs to benefit the poor and young people.
She wrote the column in response to angry feedback she got on this piece, “The safety net catches the middle class more than the poor.”
