Deb Niemeier
Professor Niemeier is the founding director of the Sustainable Design Academy in the UC Davis College of Engineering. Her research interests span transportation and vehicle emissions; energy consumption and land use interactions; and public sector infrastructure programming and budgeting. She is currently a member of the National Academy's Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and as a member of the Mars Corporation Sustainability Board. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research, Part A, one of the top three transportation journals internationally. Working with an interdisciplinary group of graduate students, post-doctoral scholars and faculty, she has published more than 110 journal articles and book chapters.
She has been a member of independent expert review teams to assess the cost increases in the construction of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge and to review the cost methods used for the proposed 3rd locks of the Panama Canal. She also recently served four years as UC Davis Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of the John Muir Institute, where more than 100 researchers collaborate on environmental research. Her honors include the Aldo Leopold Leadership Award (2005), the Chancellor's Fellow Award (2001-2004), and the UC Davis Outstanding Faculty Mentor (1997) and Faculty Advisor (1995) awards.
She joined UC Davis in 1994 after completing her Ph.D. at the University of Washington.
