The first time that I had the house to myself on a Saturday morning I must have been around ten or so. We had a record player in the living room and my dad’s collection of albums – mostly the Beatles, Beethoven, and Mozart - was next to the piano. Somewhere, tucked in the middle though, was Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”.
In the sort of unabashed and full-volume fashion that one takes when alone, the broom became my dance partner, and for that twenty minutes everything else was secondary. That opening clarinet crescendo and ascension is still my all time favorite!
