Apple Adds New Addition To Elk Grove Site

Apple is putting more money into its Elk Grove campus. The Sacramento Business Journal's Sonya Sorich says the tech-giant's latest plans focus on a new amenity for employees.

"Apple is planning a 12,253 square foot cafeteria addition to an existing building on its campus in Elk Grove,” says Sorich. “Apple has filed an application with the city, but hasn't commented on those plans."

Earlier this year, the company received building permits to convert an Elk Grove building that formerly housed DeVry University into office space. Apple is the second-largest tech company in the Sacramento region behind Intel. Apple's Elk Grove site has always been a logistics, warehouse and distribution location for the company. Although the company leases many of its buildings around the world, it owns its buildings in Elk Grove.

Combellack’s In Placerville Is Closing

After more than 100 years in business, a clothing store in Placerville called Combellack's is closing. Sorich says competition with online shopping is not the main reason.

"The store's fourth-generation owner acknowledged that e-commerce has affected all small businesses,” says Sorich. “But she said the decision to close Combellack's was a personal one. She's ready to retire."

The store on Main Street started a going-out-of-business sale this week, which is expected to last at least through the end of December. The owners of the business attribute the store's long run to its friendly atmosphere, and the fact that they're open seven days a week, which is not typical with small businesses.

Country Club Adding Another Store

A Sacramento shopping mall that lost many of its retail tenants during and after the recession continues to be on the rebound. Sorich says Country Club Plaza in the Arden-Arcade area is adding another store.

"The latest addition is called That's Cheap, and it will fill a space previously occupied by Bed Bath and Beyond,” says Sorich. “The store sells deeply discounted furniture and home goods. The Country Club Plaza site could open Dec. 1."

That's Cheap also has a location in Orangevale. Its parent company, the locally based RL Liquidators, also operates the popular discount chain Falling Prices. Both brands are expected to open more locations in the Sacramento area next year. Country Club Plaza has gradually added tenants since it was acquired by EDM Realty Corporation in 2014. Recent additions include a Cinema West movie theater that opened earlier this year.
