Caltrans set out major expansions that will benefit commuters in San Joaquin County in its newly released Draft 2018 State Rail Plan.
Among them is a $400 million investment in ACE, which provides commuter service from Stockton to Santa Clara.
ACE plans to expand service into Modesto and Ceres by 2023 and Merced by 2027.
Chris Kay with the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission said Amtrak will also start daily service in the morning to Sacramento from Stockton along with return trips in the afternoon and evening.
“We’ll have a train that will get to Sacramento before 8 a.m., and another train that will get in around 11 a.m.," Kay said. "So people can take a full day or half day in Sacramento, and so that service is scheduled to start in early January of 2018.”
Kay said in the past five years ridership has doubled on ACE to 1.3 million passengers last year.
