Donations during the summer dip considerably due to people taking vacation, summer break for schools, and fewer blood drives from July to August.
To add to the problem are more accidents that involve trauma and the need for blood.
Alexander Sigua with Blood Source says last month donations in its network serving 28 states were down by over 5,000 donations.
“Blood Source strives to keep a four day supply of every blood type on the shelf at all times," Sigua says, "in order to meet the needs of patients at more than 40 hospitals throughout Northern and Central California.”
Sigua says every two seconds somebody in this country needs blood, and one donor can save three lives.
